Badenoch & Strathspey Community ConnXions (BSCX) has 24 years’ experience of providing affordable, accessible transport to anyone who needs it in the Badenoch & Strathspey region of the Cairngorms National Park.
We have a low environmental impact, and high social impact. Our services are available to all, and consider ability to pay, with discounts for those on lower incomes to tackle the cost-of-living crisis. We link people with services and businesses, or bring items to people, like prescriptions and food.
We are supported by a wonderful team of volunteers who assist in the delivery of our services.
Objectives of the project
This project specifically will address the downturn in volunteers coming forward since Covid.
Volunteers will be recruited for their connection to their local community and local organisations and will be assessed for their best role. Training and support will be given through their development; some may be signposted on to partner organisations.
Any challenges or obstacles to the project and how were these over come
Since coming out of covid the recruitment and retention of volunteers has been challenging for us. We have looked at different tools and ways of publicising volunteering opportunities. Many of our older volunteers have retired and we are struggling to replace them with younger people.
We are using the channels of social media to reach a “younger” audience, by posting regular pictures, videos and good news stories to encourage the “fun part” of volunteering. E.g. the storyline of fictitious characters Angus & Catriona
Impact of the fund/what has been the outcome
The impact of the fund has been profoundly positive, leading to significant improvements across various aspects of the community. Volunteers have reported enhanced confidence, bolstered by the acquisition of new skills and the knowledge that they can access local transport when needed. This accessibility has also fostered a stronger sense of belonging, as individuals feel more integrated into their community. Many have formed new friendships, enjoying conversations and laughter that alleviate feelings of isolation. The opportunity to work at the allotment provides not only the benefits of sunshine and fresh air but also a weekly purpose that many find fulfilling. Moreover, the fund has enabled volunteers to contribute meaningfully by growing food to support the local Food Share project. Overall, these activities have significantly improved mental well-being, as participants regularly interact and connect with others, enhancing their daily social experiences.
